Algonquin College Research Study Seeks Early‑Career Paramedics

10 April 2026

Algonquin College’s Paramedicine Research Lab is inviting recent graduates of the college's Primary Care Paramedic program to participate in a new research study exploring the early realities of working as a paramedic.

The study, Stethoscopes and Scissors: A Longitudinal Research Project Testing Role Identity Dissonance Among Paramedic Students and Professionals, is led by Dr. Chris Martin at Algonquin College, in partnership with Renfrew Paramedic Service and the McNally Project.

What is the study about?

The research examines how the professional identity students develop during paramedic education aligns with the realities they experience once working in the field. In particular, the study looks at how expectations about the paramedic role compare with day‑to‑day clinical practice during the early months of employment.

Findings from this research are intended to support improvements in paramedic education by identifying learning outcomes that graduates view as practical, useful, and relevant to real‑world practice.

What does participation involve?

Participants are asked to complete a brief online questionnaire, which takes approximately 11–15 minutes to complete. The survey is administered using SurveyMonkey.

At the end of the questionnaire, participants may also choose to indicate interest in a follow‑up interview, which would be arranged at a time and place convenient to the participant.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and participants may withdraw at any time.

Who can participate?

To take part in the study, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a graduate of Algonquin College’s Paramedic program
  • Have graduated within the past 15 months
