CPAP and pneumonia

Submission ID: 223

Question:

Is it appropriate to use CPAP in severe respiratory distress, suspected to be pneumonia? Pt is conscious with crackles through out, low SPO2 and obvious distress.

Answer:

CPAP should only be delivered if the working diagnosis is COPD or acute pulmonary edema. Pneumonia on its own is not an indication for CPAP. For more information, you can review the following modules on MedicLEARN:

• Spring CME 2017 with a focus on Respiratory emergencies and treatment plans
• Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
